In order to incite a thoughtful discussion about the way we teach our students to interpret objects and how this interpretation is reflected on the final results of treatments, the opening text in this section takes certain ideas about interpretation in conservation up to the limit. A technically correct restoration is not enough, all conservative decisions should be based on an interpretation of the object. The aim of restoration is to fulfil the needs of the people who cherish an object, rather than those of the object itself. Some examples of conservation projects in which decisions have been thoroughly justified taking into account the distinct values of particular objects, this is not the general rule. The conservator needs to learn how to work in an interdisciplinary way, as opposed to working in parallel with other specialists.
